Skills Needed For Reading

Why is it so difficult for dyslexic children to learn to read?

  1. Because they can't hear that words are made up of sounds. They can't hear that 'goat' contains 3 sounds. Or even that 'mad' and 'dog' both contain a 'd' sound.
  2. They can't control their eye movements very well, so they can't focus both eyes on the same letter and then scan across the page.

Dyslexia Gold's unique programs address both of these problems.

Most people with dyslexia also have a problem hearing sounds in words, which is called the phonological deficit. For example they can’t hear that goat contains 3 sounds – g oa t. It’s just one blob of sound to them.

Nowadays reading is generally taught via phonics. I.e. your child is taught that oa makes the long o sound. And that they should blend g + oa + t to make goat. But if your child can’t hear that goat contains three sounds, then it’s no use teaching them that oa makes a long o sound.

Fluency Builder contains 50 days worth of activities to practice hearing and manipulating sounds in words. These activities have been proven to change the regions of the brain which are activated when reading, and to not only make your dyslexic child more fluent but also to make them read more like a non-dyslexic child does.

Eye Control Problems

In order to read fluently and effortlessly you need to be able to focus both eyes on the same letter, and then track smoothly across the page.

Engaging Eyes contains 3D games that trains you to focus both eyes on the same point. This reduces excessive eye movements, which makes reading easier.
